Brian Shiller is a founding partner of Ruby Shiller Enenajor and leads the firm's civil litigation practice. With more than three decades of litigation experience, he focuses heavily on media and regulatory law, and he successfully argued one of the leading cases on civil fraud and a defendant's right to access frozen assets for living expenses and professional fees. He has acted for both plaintiffs and defendants in broadcast and internet libel claims, obtaining damage awards, retractions and apologies for clients including politicians, lawyers and doctors in some of the country's most high-profile defamation cases, and he also argued a leading case on internet libel concerning the proportionality of examining a client's computer contents. Brian's practice includes a strong public interest component: he regularly represents people wronged by government actors and police in cases involving unlawful arrest, malicious prosecution, assault and Charter or human rights breaches. He also has extensive experience in animal welfare law, appearing many times before the Animal Care Review Board and the Superior Court. He holds a B.C.L. and LL.B., has appeared at all levels of court in Ontario and in the Federal Court, and chairs the Board of Directors of Reconnect Community Health Services.
