About Eric Uhlmann

Eric Uhlmann is a Kitchener criminal defence lawyer whose whole career, now more than 10 years long, has been spent in criminal law and nothing else. Most of the people Uhlmann represents come from Kitchener and Guelph, and the files taken on today are generally the more serious ones, where the Crown has chosen to proceed by indictment.

The pull toward criminal work began at Queen's University. As a law student, Uhlmann helped inmates in the federal system with their parole hearings and gave time to Queen's Legal Aid. Articling followed in Toronto with criminal lawyer Alan D. Gold, and those long hours under a mentor built the skills Uhlmann now uses to stand up for clients' rights. Next came a stint with a small defence firm in Kingston, running trials and sharpening courtroom ability, before Uhlmann went solo in Kitchener in 2014.

What sets Uhlmann apart is time spent on both sides of a courtroom. Alongside a small private defence caseload across Southwestern Ontario, Uhlmann prosecutes part time for the Crown in Toronto, and believes the combination makes for a better lawyer whichever side a given case falls on. To steer clear of conflicts, Uhlmann won't act for the defence in Toronto, except on appeals at the Ontario Court of Appeal. Clients can work with Uhlmann in French or Spanish as well as English, though no new clients are being taken on right now.
