Free consultationEric Uhlmann Criminal Defence Lawyer is a one-lawyer criminal defence practice in Kitchener. Eric Uhlmann has run it from Irvin Street, in the Central Frederick neighbourhood near downtown, since 2014, and takes criminal cases only. The firm has more than ten years of criminal law behind it and represents clients mainly in Kitchener and Guelph. It concentrates on the more serious end of the docket, the matters where the Crown proceeds by indictment: drug trafficking under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, sexual assault, aggravated assault and assault by choking, robbery, and break and enter into a dwelling. It doesn't take theft, fraud, or mischief files.
Uhlmann holds a law degree from Queen's University, where the volunteer work included Queen's Legal Aid and helping federal inmates prepare for parole hearings. After articling with the Toronto criminal lawyer Alan D. Gold and a stint at a small criminal defence firm in Kingston, the practice settled in Kitchener. It also does part-time Crown prosecutor work in Toronto and, apart from appeals, doesn't take Toronto defence cases. Appeals run to the Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Appeal. Services are offered in French and Spanish as well as English. As of its own website, the firm isn't taking on new clients.

Legal aidThe office sits on Irvin Street in Central Frederick, one of the older residential pockets in the heart of downtown Kitchener. It's a leafy, mixed neighbourhood bordered by Weber Street East and the expressway, with small green spaces like Weber Park and Brubacher Green tucked between the blocks. High-rises are the largest share of the housing here, alongside detached houses and low-rises. For a criminal practice the spot is handy: the Kitchener Courthouse at 85 Frederick Street, where the Ontario Court of Justice hears the city's criminal matters, sits a short way down the street, and the firm's work also reaches the courts in Guelph.
