Derek Fazakas was called to the Ontario bar in 1996 and has focused on estate matters ranging from estate planning to acting as executor and advising executors. That practice is now concentrated on estate litigation, an area Fazakas finds well suited to using long-held skill and experience to solve complex, deeply personal disputes. Every file is prepared for trial while negotiated resolutions are also pursued, on the view that trial readiness strengthens a client's position at the negotiating table. Fazakas wrote a textbook for law clerks on estates that is now in its sixth printing, and has taught as an instructor for Ontario law clerks. Since 2015 Fazakas has also worked as a mediator focused specifically on estate disputes, drawing on more than two decades of estates experience to help parties reach resolution.
