About Carrie

Carrie Smit is a partner and heads the Tax Group at Goodmans. Her transaction-based practice covers the income tax issues that arise in corporate and commercial deals, including cross-border mergers, corporate reorganizations, domestic and international debt financings, debt restructurings, and private equity investments. Chambers Global, Chambers Canada, The Legal 500 Canada, Best Lawyers in Canada, and several Lexpert and Euromoney guides have recognized her tax work. In 2022, the Ontario Bar Association gave her its Award of Excellence in Tax Law, and she's also received the Canadian Tax Foundation's Douglas J. Sherbaniuk Distinguished Writing Award. Best Lawyers named her Toronto's Tax Lawyer of the Year in both 2016 and 2018, and in 2012 she won the Best in Tax Award at the Euromoney Americas' Women in Business Law Awards. Smit speaks often at tax conferences, writes on income tax topics, and regularly presents at the CBA's Tax Law for Lawyers conference. She's also on the executive of the Joint Committee on Taxation of the Canadian Bar Association and Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada.
