About GL Family Law

GL Family Law is a solo family law practice in Uptown Waterloo, led by Kirsty Katul. The firm concentrates on resolving separation and divorce outside the court process, through mediation, collaborative family law, negotiated separation agreements, and uncontested divorce. Katul is an Accredited Family Mediator with the Ontario Association for Family Mediation. In mediation the firm acts as a neutral third party for both people rather than representing one side, helping a couple work through parenting, support, and property questions together. Each person can still get independent legal advice and have a lawyer review the final agreement before anyone signs it.

The out-of-court focus grew out of earlier work in family law litigation. Before opening the practice, Katul earned a BA from the University of Toronto, an MA from OISE, and an LL.B from Osgoode Hall Law School, and was called to the Ontario bar in 2002. The firm is also a member of Best4All, the collaborative divorce group for Waterloo Region, which brings legal, financial, and family professionals together on a single file. Initial consultations are complimentary.

Who handles what

The neighbourhood

The office is on King Street South, the main street of Uptown Waterloo and the city's central district. It's a walkable core of shops, restaurants, banks, and professional offices built around Waterloo Public Square, with a couple of hours of free parking for anyone driving in. For a practice that works to keep families out of the courtroom, the setting fits: this is Waterloo's commercial heart rather than its court district, an everyday sort of place to sit down and work through a separation.

Frequently asked questions

Does GL Family Law go to court?
The firm concentrates on resolving separation and divorce outside the court process, through mediation, collaborative family law, negotiated separation agreements, and uncontested divorce. For couples who have already agreed on everything, the firm handles the preparation, service, and filing of the documents an uncontested divorce needs, so nobody has to appear in court.
What's the difference between mediation and collaborative family law here?
In mediation, the firm acts as a neutral third party for both people and doesn't represent either side, though each person can still get independent legal advice and have a lawyer review the final agreement. In the collaborative process, each person keeps their own collaboratively trained lawyer, everyone signs an agreement not to go to court, and financial or family professionals can be brought in when they're needed.
Is the mediator accredited?
Yes. Kirsty Katul is an Accredited Family Mediator with the Ontario Association for Family Mediation, and was called to the Ontario bar in 2002.
Can the firm handle our separation agreement or divorce if we already agree on everything?
Yes. Once a couple has settled all the issues, the firm can draft the separation agreement and take care of an uncontested divorce, including preparing, serving, and filing the court documents.
Does GL Family Law help with parenting, child support, and property?
Yes. Whether through mediation or the collaborative process, the firm helps couples work through parenting arrangements, child and spousal support, and dividing property as part of a separation.
Where is the firm and is the first meeting free?
The office is at Suite 300, 22 King Street South in Uptown Waterloo. Initial consultations are complimentary, and you can reach the firm at (519) 266-4529.
