About Kirsty Katul

Kirsty Katul helps separating couples settle their family matters without a court battle, working at GL Family Law in Waterloo as a collaborative family lawyer and an Accredited Family Mediator. Mediation, the collaborative process and lawyer-to-lawyer negotiation are all options, and whichever one a couple picks, the aim stays the same: people who understand their choices well enough to decide with confidence while emotions are running high.

Katul's legal career started with a 2002 call to the bar after Osgoode Hall Law School. The early years went to family law litigation, acting for clients on every kind of family issue and working out complex settlements both at the courthouse and away from it. That work gave Katul a close look at the toll the conventional legal route takes on families, in money and in stress, and the conviction that people going through one of the hardest stretches of their lives deserved a better way.

Training in Collaborative Family Law showed Katul how much creative, outside-the-box thinking can do when a settlement is being shaped. Today Katul sits on two committees of the Ontario Association of Collaborative Professionals: Practices and Procedures, and Strategic Planning.

Katul grew up in Scotland, moved to Canada at 16 and spent the years that followed in Toronto, finishing both a BA and an MA at the University of Toronto in 1994. Katul works with clients across Waterloo Region and the surrounding area.

Family Law

Family mediation

As a mediator Katul stays neutral and acts for neither spouse, guiding couples through property, support and child-related questions that come with a separation. Sessions focus on generating options and reaching decisions in a safe setting where everyone gets heard.

Collaborative family law

On a collaborative file the clients sign an agreement that they won't go to court, and financial and family professionals can join the lawyers on the team. Katul sees the process as cheaper and quicker than the traditional route, with clients keeping control of the outcome and the relationships that matter to them protected.

Separation agreements and uncontested divorce

Whatever route a couple takes, Katul can draft a clear, complete separation agreement. Once everything's settled, Katul can also look after the uncontested divorce application, from preparing the documents to serving and filing them.
