Smith Employment Law is a Toronto employment law practice, operated as WES Law Professional Corporation and built around founder Waheeda Ekhlas Smith. The office is in the Sun Life Centre at 150 King Street West, in the city's Financial District, and the practice takes on work from across the Greater Toronto Area, including Mississauga, Oakville, Brampton, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Barrie, Oshawa, Pickering and Halton Hills. Rather than acting for only one side, the firm handles both employees and employers, often on the same kinds of disputes.
On the employee side, the work covers wrongful and constructive dismissal, severance negotiations, workplace and sexual harassment, human rights and discrimination complaints, disability and parental leave issues, and reviewing employment contracts and non-solicitation clauses before they're signed. On the employer side, the firm drafts contracts and workplace policies, defends dismissal claims and carries out workplace investigations. Smith earned a JD from the University of Windsor in 2012, with academic awards in Civil Procedure and Constitutional Litigation, and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours French Language and Literature) from the University of Western Ontario in 2009. Before becoming a lawyer, Smith worked for years as a legal assistant, starting at 18.

Payment plansThe firm's office is in the Sun Life Centre, the stainless steel and glass tower at the corner of King Street West and University Avenue that opened in 1984 as Sun Life Financial's global headquarters before the insurer moved out in 2017. The tower now houses a Bank of Canada regional office and sits at the heart of Toronto's Financial District, where several of Canada's largest banks, insurers and professional services firms keep their head offices, the kind of employers whose staff and HR departments make up much of an employment law practice's client base on both sides of a dispute. The building connects directly into the PATH network and St. Andrew subway station, which makes it a straightforward stop for clients coming in from elsewhere in the GTA for a consultation.
