About Sheard Law

Sheard Law is a family law and estates firm operating from Carlaw Avenue in Toronto's east end, serving the Danforth, Riverdale, Leslieville and East York communities. Its founder, John Sheard, was called to the Ontario bar in 2005 after earning an LL.B. from Queen's University and an honours B.A. in English from the University of Toronto. The firm has worked out of this part of Toronto for more than 15 years, handling divorce and separation, parenting and child support arrangements, spousal support, and property division, along with probate, estate administration and estate litigation.

Sheard also spent nearly 10 years as an appointed agent for the Office of the Children's Lawyer, representing children's interests in high-conflict custody disputes, and the firm offers family mediation as an alternative to court for couples who want to work out a separation themselves. Sheard Law now practices in association with Longo Lawyers, a Toronto litigation firm, which added a second office at Yonge and Sheppard and brought personal injury representation into the practice alongside its original family and estates work.

The neighbourhood

Sheard Law's main office is in the Wrigley Building at 235 Carlaw Avenue, in the stretch of Riverdale, Leslieville and East York the firm has served for more than 15 years. The building dates to 1914, when the William Wrigley Jr. Company began putting up a Beaux Arts style factory there, modeled on Wrigley's original plant in Chicago, to manufacture chewing gum for the Canadian market. Carlaw Avenue was once lined with factories like this one, and many of the surviving buildings on the street, including the one the firm now occupies, have since been converted into lofts and office space.
