About Marlaw

Marlaw is a small family law firm based in the Yonge and Sheppard area of Toronto's North York district, run by lawyer Maral Mirhosseini. The practice takes on family law matters such as divorce, spousal and child support, custody, and separation agreements, alongside immigration applications, residential real estate closings, wills and estate planning, and civil litigation. A single lawyer runs the office out of a suite in the Madison Centre tower at 4950 Yonge Street, and the firm offers a free ten minute consultation before opening a file.

Maral Mirhosseini's path into law took a few turns: a Bachelor of Psychology from York University and study toward a Doctor of Pharmacy at the University of Waterloo came before an LL.B. from the University of Law in the United Kingdom. Articling followed at a plaintiff side personal injury firm and a small North York practice, with experience gained across real estate, family law, and wills and estates. The firm has also published a Persian language guide to divorce in Ontario for Toronto's Farsi speaking community.

The neighbourhood

Marlaw's office is in Madison Centre, a 24 storey office and retail tower at 4950 Yonge Street in the North Yonge corridor of North York, which has direct underground access to the Yonge-Sheppard subway station and sits a few minutes from Highway 401. For a small practice handling family law, immigration, and real estate matters that can draw clients from across the Greater Toronto Area, an office with a subway stop built into the building and quick highway access makes it easier for people to get to appointments without hunting for street parking.

Frequently asked questions

Does Marlaw handle uncontested divorces, and what does it cost?
Yes. Marlaw offers a paperwork only package for $700 plus HST that covers completing and filing the court forms and serving the other spouse, and a complete package at $1,800 plus HST, court fee, and serving fee that also covers a parenting plan and the final divorce order. The firm estimates most uncontested cases take about four months, plus the 31 day waiting period after the order is granted.
Can Marlaw help me sponsor my spouse or partner to come to Canada?
Yes. Marlaw prepares spousal and partner sponsorship applications for permanent residence, and it offers a free ten minute consultation to review a client's situation before starting the paperwork.
I'm dealing with domestic violence in my relationship. Can Marlaw help?
Marlaw's family law practice covers domestic violence situations on the civil side, such as separation, support, and parenting arrangements that follow abuse. If a partner is also facing a criminal assault charge, that side of the matter needs a separate criminal lawyer to deal directly with the Crown Attorney, since Marlaw's own practice is family and civil law.
Can Marlaw prepare my will and powers of attorney?
Yes. The firm drafts wills that document how a client's assets should be distributed after death, along with powers of attorney for property and finances or for personal care.
I'm buying a home or refinancing a mortgage in Toronto. Can Marlaw close the deal?
Yes. Marlaw handles residential real estate purchases and sales, and it also does mortgage registration and discharge work with both A and B lenders.
How do I book a consultation with Marlaw, and is it free?
Marlaw offers a free ten minute initial consultation, and appointments can be booked online through the firm's Calendly scheduling page. Meetings can be held by phone or by Zoom, and Marlaw notes that these consultations may be recorded and kept confidentially in the client's file.
