Rocco Galati Law Firm, Professional Corporation is a small Toronto firm that practises tax, civil, criminal, immigration, and administrative litigation, much of it built around constitutional challenges to government action. Rocco Galati founded the firm and directs its tax and civil litigation work. Galati was born in Calabria, Italy, and the family immigrated to Toronto in the mid 1960s. Galati studied poetry in Montreal before earning a B.A. from McGill University and a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School. Before entering private practice, Galati worked at the federal Department of Justice.
Three other lawyers round out the practice. Paul Slansky leads criminal litigation and holds degrees from the University of Windsor and the University of Detroit. Amina Sherazee directs immigration, human rights, and women's litigation and studied law at Windsor. Manuel Azevedo leads administrative law litigation and holds an LL.M. from the London School of Economics. The firm shares its College Street office, phone, and fax number with the Constitutional Rights Centre, a non profit Galati incorporated in Ontario in November 2004 to help fund constitutional litigation without government money, relying instead on private donations and pro bono work from lawyers and law students.
Wheelchair accessible
By appointmentThe firm's College Street address sits in Toronto's Little Italy, a strip that's been a hub for the city's Italian community since immigrants began settling there in the early 1900s, reaching its peak Italian identity by the 1930s and 40s. Cafe Diplomatico, open on the strip since 1968, and the annual Good Friday procession are among the traditions that have outlasted the area's later shift toward a broader, more mixed population. Galati, whose own family immigrated from Calabria, Italy, in the 1960s, still runs the firm from a three storey house on the street, according to a Globe and Mail profile.
