Anthony Stephen Benjamin, called to the Ontario Bar in 2001, founded the firm in 2010 on the conviction that everyone deserves proper representation. Working at the Financial Services Committee with Ontario's Attorney General, Anthony saw some claimants treated unequally by insurers, and saw visible minorities and immigrants neglected and mistreated by the legal and insurance systems. Anthony wanted to stand up for people who might otherwise feel daunted by how complicated injury law can be.
The lawyers bring varied backgrounds. Larry Henry, a senior associate called in 2001, spent close to ten years on the plaintiff and defence sides at injury and insurance defence firms, and also practised corporate commercial and business law on Bay Street. Olubunmi Akinsanmi articled at Benjamin Law, was called in 2014 and had earlier been an in-house solicitor with a local government authority in the UK. Fayola Benjamin joined in 2015 and became an associate after the 2019 call, Kayla Benjamin holds a University of Toronto science degree and was called in 2018, and Shawbee Lao Pineda earned a law degree in the Philippines in 2000 before being called in Canada in 2014.
The head office is on Finch Avenue West in North York, with further offices on Chrysler Drive in Brampton and on Kingston Road in Ajax. The first consultation is free, and on injury and other claims, fees are charged on contingency, so a client pays nothing unless money is recovered.
The injury practice covers road crashes involving cars and motorcycles, spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries, and claims arising from falls, dog bites, workplace injuries and wrongful deaths. Larry Henry's litigation centres on motor vehicle and slip and fall claims, Fayola Benjamin and Kayla Benjamin both work on plaintiff tort and accident benefits files, and one of the firm's law clerks has experience filing applications at the Licence Appeal Tribunal.
Fayola Benjamin and Kayla Benjamin both take on long-term disability claims, and Olubunmi Akinsanmi acts on long-term disability benefits as well as Canada Pension Plan disability matters.
Benjamin Law acts for employees on wrongful dismissal, breached employment contracts, harassment at work and human rights violations, with Olubunmi Akinsanmi handling employee-side matters. An online calculator lets a worker estimate reasonable notice and severance pay before signing anything.
