Nicolas M. Rouleau Professional Corporation is a solo appellate and constitutional law practice based in Toronto, with an office on Burnside Drive. Rouleau was called to the bar in 2007, after clerking for Justice Marie Deschamps at the Supreme Court of Canada, and has built the practice around criminal, civil, and constitutional appeals. Matters are argued before the Supreme Court of Canada, the Court of Appeal for Ontario, other provincial courts of appeal, and the Federal Court of Appeal. Cases have included Conseil scolaire francophone de la Colombie-Britannique v British Columbia and Caron v Alberta at the Supreme Court, along with constitutional matters touching minority-language education rights and disability rights, including work for Inclusion Canada and the Council for Canadians with Disabilities.
Rouleau holds a Master of the Science of Law (JSM) from Stanford University and an LL.B. magna cum laude from the University of Ottawa's French Common Law Program, and is fluently bilingual in French and English. Much of the work is advisory, including helping other lawyers prepare appeals, leave applications, and judicial reviews. Rouleau also reviews potential Supreme Court of Canada cases for Pro Bono Law Ontario's Supreme Court Leave to Appeal Assistance Project.
The office is at 41 Burnside Drive, a residential street in Toronto. This is a quieter setting than the downtown legal district, which suits a practice built around written advocacy and appellate argument rather than in-person client meetings. Clients and referring lawyers typically reach the firm by phone or email, since the work runs on factums, transcripts, and court schedules rather than walk-in visits.
