Nazami & Associates is a Toronto law firm that practises exclusively in immigration and refugee law, from an office at 598 St. Clair Avenue West. Hadayt Nazami is senior counsel at the firm, earned a B.A. (Honours) and an M.A. in political science from York University and a J.D. from Osgoode Hall Law School, and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 2004. Nazami is a refugee and has described a career built on advocacy for social justice, equality and human rights. The practice covers immigration and refugee law generally, inadmissibility cases involving national security, criminal, medical and other grounds, and administrative law and judicial review, with appellate work before the Federal Court and the Supreme Court of Canada.
Nazami acted for the client in Canada (Minister of Citizenship and Immigration) v. Vavilov, the 2019 Supreme Court of Canada decision that set a new framework for judicial review of administrative decisions and confirmed the Canadian citizenship of a man born in Toronto to parents who turned out to be foreign intelligence agents. Nazami has also represented clients before the Iacobucci Inquiry into the detention and torture of Canadians abroad, served as political litigation advisor in the case that became known as the Nico Amendment to federal immigration law, and represented British Member of Parliament George Galloway after Galloway was barred from entering Canada in 2010. The small team also includes an associate and an articling student, and the firm says it provides multilingual services.
The office is on St. Clair Avenue West, a stretch of midtown Toronto that was rebuilt in the mid-2000s around a dedicated right of way for the 512 St. Clair streetcar, which connects to the subway at St. Clair West station. The avenue has long been associated with Toronto's Portuguese, Latin American and Italian communities, a fitting setting for a firm that works only in immigration and refugee law.
