The neighbourhood
The office at 197 Spadina Ave. sits on a stretch that, for decades, was the centre of Jewish life in Toronto along with nearby Kensington Market, and the blocks around Spadina were home to the garment district. Later, Toronto's Chinatown shifted west along Dundas onto Spadina after much of the original neighbourhood was expropriated for the new City Hall and Nathan Phillips Square. Most of Spadina Avenue is a six-lane road with streetcar lanes running down its middle.
The second office, at 147 Liberty Street, stands at the southwest corner of Liberty Street and Fraser Avenue in Liberty Village. The neighbourhood takes its name from Liberty Street, which was the first street that convicts released from the area's two prisons would walk. Being close to the railway tracks made it an industrial district, and in the 1970s and 1980s cheap rent and big industrial spaces drew artists looking for studios. Its business improvement area, founded in 2001, now represents more than 600 member businesses.
