Morris + Stoltz LLP is a small Toronto firm that limits its practice entirely to medical negligence, health law, and patient advocacy. Its only office is at 480 University Avenue in downtown Toronto. The firm's name traces back to founding partner Jillian Evans, who left after nearly eight years to join the Office of the Children's Lawyer. The firm continues under Ken Morris and Lori Stoltz, joined by Kelly Hayden and Michael Hodgins. Together the four lawyers represent patients, healthcare providers, and advocacy organizations in matters that range from surgical and diagnostic negligence claims to professional discipline hearings and public health policy questions.
Ken Morris has focused on medical malpractice actions since 2003, after starting a career at McCarthy Tetrault LLP defending physicians in malpractice cases. Before practising law, Morris played basketball professionally in Europe for two years after being named an All-Canadian in both basketball and academics at the University of British Columbia. Lori Stoltz has spent more than 25 years acting for patients and health system participants, co-authored a 2008 book on Ontario's public health law, and has appeared as an intervenor before the Supreme Court of Canada as well as counsel in a judicial review application before the European Court of Justice. The firm takes cases on contingency, with fees that range from 25 percent to 35 percent depending on the case.
Wheelchair accessibleThe firm's office is at 480 University Avenue, Suite 604, in downtown Toronto, on the stretch of University Avenue known locally as Hospital Row, home to Toronto General, Toronto Western, Mount Sinai, Princess Margaret, and SickKids hospitals. For a firm whose practice is built entirely around medical negligence and health law, it's a fitting location: the hospitals its cases are often about sit along the same street as the office.
That stretch of University Avenue also falls within Toronto's Discovery District, a concentration of hospitals, research institutes, and the University of Toronto's medical campus. It's a setting that lines up with the firm's public health and health policy work alongside its litigation practice.
