About Mahdi Leite Family Law LLP

Mahdi Leite Family Law LLP is a Toronto family law firm with a second office in Mississauga. The two lawyer partnership brings together Poroshad Mahdi and Natacha Leite, who came to family law from different starting points. Mahdi earned a JD and a Master's in International Relations, both from the University of Toronto in 2001, and began a career as an associate at Blake, Cassels and Graydon LLP before moving into family law in 2004. Leite was called to the bar in 2004 and initially practiced criminal law before shifting the practice fully to family matters. Between them, Mahdi speaks English and Farsi, and Leite speaks English, French, and Portuguese.

The firm handles the full range of family law work: divorce and separation, custody and access, child and spousal support, division of property, and marriage contracts. It also prepares wills and estate plans, since these can turn on the same spousal and support rights that come up in a separation, and takes on parenting disputes involving addiction or mental health concerns, as well as family law matters for same sex couples. Cases move through negotiation, mediation, or litigation as needed, and the firm doesn't charge for an initial consultation. Law clerk Anita Belmonte, a University of Toronto science graduate who later completed Seneca College's Law Clerk Accelerated Diploma Program with honours, rounds out the team.

The neighbourhood

The Toronto office is in a 16 storey office tower at 4711 Yonge Street, built in 1987 in the Yonge and Sheppard area of North York. The building connects directly underground to Sheppard-Yonge station, where the Yonge and Sheppard subway lines meet, so clients from across the city can reach the office without a car.

The Mississauga office is in Sussex Centre at 90 Burnhamthorpe Road West, a 17 storey tower that opened the same year, 1987, in Mississauga City Centre. It's a short walk from Square One Shopping Centre and the MiWay transit hub, in the office and retail core that anchors that end of the Greater Toronto Area.

Frequently asked questions

Does Mahdi Leite Family Law handle cases where addiction or mental health is part of the picture?
Yes. The firm advises on parenting and support cases that involve substance use, depression, or personality disorders, and how courts tend to weigh those factors, for example treating addiction as something the person is expected to seek treatment for rather than a reason to punish.
Can Mahdi Leite Family Law help a same sex couple with a family law matter?
Yes. The firm's site explains that same sex couples have the same marriage, parenting, and property rights as opposite sex couples under Ontario law, including provisions that let a child have more than two parents in some assisted reproduction situations.
Will my case have to go to court?
Not necessarily. The firm works through negotiation and mediation as well as litigation, and decides case by case which approach fits the situation instead of defaulting straight to a courtroom.
What languages can I get help in at Mahdi Leite Family Law?
Between the two lawyers, the firm can work with clients in English, French, Portuguese, and Farsi.
Does the firm only handle divorce, or can it also prepare a will?
Alongside divorce and separation work, the firm also prepares wills and estate plans, since a will can be affected by the same spousal support and property rules that come up in family law.
Is there a cost to meet with the firm the first time?
The firm offers a free initial consultation at both its Toronto and Mississauga offices.
