M & Company’s family law practice is devoted exclusively to high-net-worth professionals, business owners and executives, guiding them through complex divorce and separation matters, and it helps clients shield their wealth ahead of time with marriage contracts. The leadership team is made up of former Bay Street lawyers.
Anna-Marie Musson founded the firm and is its managing lawyer. Musson earned an LL.B. from the University of Windsor in 2002, started out on Bay Street more than 20 years ago and became a litigation partner at a national firm; these days the focus is on settling clients' issues out of court. Jane Cvijan, senior counsel, heads the Written Advocacy group, and Katherine Badenoch, also senior counsel, heads Advocacy. Senior counsel Terrah Smith has practised family law since 2015, after time at a family firm in Calgary and at full-service and family-focused practices in the Kitchener-Waterloo and London regions, while senior counsel Roger Macintosh began in the Waterloo Region doing family and real estate work.
Much of the firm's work comes through referrals from financial advisors, accountants and lawyers, and it doesn't take on every case. Behind the lawyers there's a senior paralegal, a senior law clerk and a director of operations.

History
M & Company's roots are in Bay Street litigation, where its founding lawyer and leadership team worked on multi-million dollar commercial disputes. When those lawyers faced family law matters of their own, finding representation with the same level of sophistication proved surprisingly hard. They couldn't find it, so they built it themselves.
Before the M & Company name, the practice was known as Musson Law Firm, and Anna-Marie Musson practised at Musson Law in Toronto.

Marriage contracts and wealth-planning advice
On the planning side, M & Company works alongside a client's wealth managers, tax advisors, corporate counsel and estate planners so the structures they're building are protected under family law. Marriage contracts are drafted working with both partners, each with independent legal advice. Every client gets a designated lawyer who oversees the entire matter and is the main point of contact. Three internal groups back that lawyer up. Written Advocacy prepares every court document and written submission. Financial Advocacy looks after financial disclosure, brings in valuators and forensic accountants as needed, works through complex pay structures and builds tax-efficient settlement strategies. Litigation is the group that goes to court, handling examinations and standing up for clients at trial. It is firm policy that no two lawyers ever bill a client for the same task.
Instead of having lawyers or paralegals complete financial statements, M & Company has brought former Big Four accounting firm partners onto its team, and CPA expertise on every Form 13.1 Financial Statement is standard practice. Legal fee budgets are set together with each client, and the firm commits to transparent communication about costs throughout.

The neighbourhood
Scotia Plaza went up between 1985 and 1988 to a WZMH Architects design, first as Scotiabank's global headquarters. It occupies a financial district block framed by Yonge Street, King Street West, Bay Street and Adelaide Street West. Much of the outside is clad in red Napoleon granite that was quarried in Sweden and finished in Italy, and the tower ties into the PATH network.
The Waterloo office is in the Waterloo Insurance Building at 14 Erb Street West, a designated Part IV heritage property. Four insurance companies have called the building home, and it later served as the Waterloo detachment of the Waterloo Regional Police Service. Today it houses Den 1880, a heritage coworking space in Uptown Waterloo used by founders, creatives and teams.
