Lucentem Sports & Entertainment Law P.C. is a small Toronto firm built around business and intellectual property work for people in sports, music, film, and fashion. Founder and managing partner Layth Gafoor studied at Osgoode Hall Law School and competed as a boxer before turning to law. The firm's own language sums up its pitch to clients: you are the project, and it's here to support and empower you, leaving the athlete or artist free to focus on their sport or craft while Lucentem handles contracts, sponsorships, and disputes. Legal 500 included Lucentem in its 2026 Canada rankings for sports law.
The practice is split into four groups: team and individual sports, music, film and television, fashion, and combat sports, covering endorsement deals, business structuring, and disputes with governing bodies, promoters, or production partners. Gafoor teaches as an adjunct professor at Western University's Faculty of Law and served as president of the Sports Lawyers Association from 2023 to 2025, and still sits on its board. Of counsel lawyers round out the firm's bench in family law, immigration, and litigation, among them the founder of a U.S. sports law practice who has advised Major League Soccer's D.C. United.
Wheelchair accessibleLucentem's office is in the tower at 1 Dundas Street West, on what heritage surveys label the Yonge-Bay corridor of downtown Toronto. The building went up in 1977, designed by Zeidler Partnership Architects. A block east, across Yonge Street, sits Sankofa Square (long known as Yonge-Dundas Square), reachable from the TMU subway station and Toronto's underground PATH network, and ringed by the Eaton Centre, the Ed Mirvish Theatre, and one of the busiest pedestrian crossings in the country. For a firm whose clients work in sports, music, film, and fashion, the block outside its door is a fair cross section of those same industries.
