Litigationworks is a team-based litigation practice founded in 2013 by Michael Alexander, who holds law degrees from the University of Toronto and Columbia Law School and held the Laidlaw Fellowship in law and political science while studying at the University of Chicago. Rather than run a conventional office, the firm works in a virtual, team-based format with collaborating lawyers licensed in Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, and New York State, an approach it says is meant to keep litigation costs down. The firm says the 'works' in its name signifies a commitment to providing clients with bespoke solutions in the tradition of English craftsmanship.
The practice covers public law work, including Charter challenges, judicial review, and discipline proceedings before health-profession regulators, alongside private law litigation in libel and defamation, real estate, insurance, and employment disputes, plus appeals and privacy and human rights matters. Alexander has argued before the Supreme Court of Canada: in Alexander v. State Farm Fire and Casualty Company, decided in 2005, the Court allowed the appeal Alexander brought as a mortgagee, a case cited alongside the companion decision Royal Bank of Canada v. State Farm Fire and Casualty Co. on the scope of an insurer's statutory right to void coverage for an undisclosed change in risk. Outside the law, Alexander has written on inheritance planning and on Canada-U.S. competitiveness, and works as a public speaker and media commentator.
Litigationworks lists an address at 1235 Bay Street, Suite 700, Toronto, a Yorkville office building at the corner of Bay Street and Yorkville Avenue, a short walk from Bay subway station. It's a fitting base for a practice built around remote, team-based casework rather than a large downtown office: the firm draws on lawyers licensed across Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, and New York State rather than staffing a single physical location.
Yorkville sits between Toronto's uptown and downtown, surrounded by the offices, boutiques, and hotels of the city's business and cultural district, giving the firm a central point of contact for clients and for the courts, tribunals, and regulatory bodies across the city where its litigation and administrative law work is argued.
