Kalnins Law is a solo litigation practice in Toronto's Financial District, run by Ted A. Kalnins from an office suite in First Canadian Place at King and Bay Streets. Kalnins holds a law degree from the University of Western Ontario (2004) and a B.A. in History from The Ohio State University (2001), and belongs to the Canadian Bar Association, the Advocate's Society, the American Bar Association's Forum on Franchising, and the Canadian Franchise Association. The practice covers breach of contract, franchise law, intellectual property, debtor creditor rights, employment law, product liability, shareholder and real estate disputes, entertainment and sports law, and professional negligence, with matters argued before the Superior Court of Justice, the Court of Appeal for Ontario, the Federal Court of Canada, and the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal.
According to the firm's own record of past work, Kalnins has represented both franchisors and franchisees in disputes under Ontario's Arthur Wishart Act, defended a manufacturer against a breach of warranty and negligence claim, and argued the damages portion of a patent infringement case, Deeproot Green Infrastructure, LLC v. Greenblue Urban North America Inc. (2021 FC 501). Other matters have included a defence against a trademark infringement application, a stay of proceedings in favour of arbitration, and settlements for wrongfully dismissed employees and for a widow whose insurer had refused to honour an accidental death policy. Outside the legal practice, Kalnins has served as commissioner of the Intercounty Baseball League since February 2023.
Kalnins Law's office sits in First Canadian Place, the 72 story tower at the northwest corner of King and Bay Streets in the heart of Toronto's Financial District. The tower held the title of Canada's tallest building for fifty years, from 1975 until 2025, and remains the country's third tallest. It connects directly into the PATH, the city's underground pedestrian network linking the surrounding Financial District towers.
