Freeman Criminal Litigation is a criminal defence practice founded and led by D. Sid Freeman out of Camden Lane Law Chambers on Spadina Avenue in downtown Toronto, with paralegal Vith Jeganathan serving as the first point of contact for clients. Freeman graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1993, articled with the Crown Law Office Criminal from 1992 to 1993, and was called to the Ontario bar in 1994 and the Nova Scotia Barrister's Society in 1996. The practice is limited entirely to criminal law and covers matters at every level of court in Ontario, including the Court of Appeal, along with hearings before the Parole Board of Canada and the Ontario Review Board.
Before taking on the head of litigation role at the firm in May 2005, Freeman worked as duty counsel with Legal Aid Ontario from 1994 to 1996, ran a solo criminal defence practice from 1996 to 1998, and served as counsel with the Department of Justice Canada's IPOC from 1998 to 1999. Freeman also holds a Bachelor of Science in biology and a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in psychology from Acadia University, a Master of Arts in clinical psychology from the University of Saskatchewan, and a diploma in scientific computer programming, and spent two years working in the psychology department of a federal penitentiary. Freeman has been a Director of the Criminal Lawyers' Association in Toronto since 2013.
Wheelchair accessibleFreeman Criminal Litigation works out of Camden Lane Law Chambers, Suite 606 at 130 Spadina Avenue, near the corner of Spadina and Richmond Street West. The chambers model isn't a conventional law firm. It's a shared office used by a group of otherwise unaffiliated lawyers who work fraternally, an arrangement with roots in English legal tradition, where lawyers in the building can compare notes on cases and pressure test arguments with each other. The building sits a short walk from Chinatown and is easy to reach by car or public transit.
That stretch of lower Spadina, on the edge of Toronto's Fashion District and along the western side of the Entertainment District, was the heart of the city's garment and industrial trade for most of the 20th century before the factories moved out in the 1970s. The area has since redeveloped into a mix of offices, converted lofts, and new residential towers, one of which houses Freeman's Suite 606 chambers today.
