Virtual appointmentsDominion Tax Law is an independent Canadian law firm that restricts its practice to income tax, trust, and estate matters, with offices in Toronto and Calgary serving clients across the country. Founder Jonathan N. Garbutt is a barrister and solicitor called to the bar in both Alberta and Ontario, a dual licence that lets the firm advise clients in either province. Garbutt earned a law degree from the University of Toronto's Faculty of Law in 2005 and, before law school, worked as an economist in Ottawa and in Tokyo. The firm has practiced Canadian tax law for more than 20 years, covering general tax planning, corporate tax minimization, mergers and acquisitions, international private investment, transfer pricing, and CRA disputes.
Garbutt's earlier career included international private banking at a global law firm, advising high net worth clients on Canadian tax matters, and that background carries into the firm's cross-border and wealth transfer planning work today. Garbutt has been quoted on Canadian tax issues by the CBC, the Globe and Mail, and the Toronto Star, has appeared on BNN, and co-authored a 2024 paper on critical minerals subsidies for the C.D. Howe Institute. The firm doesn't offer free consultations and prefers fixed fees to hourly billing, so clients know a file's cost before work begins.

By appointmentDominion Tax Law's Toronto office sits at 120 Adelaide Street West, in the Richmond-Adelaide Centre in the city's Financial District, just steps from Bay Street. It's a shared professional office suite, which fits a practice built around a single lawyer advising clients across Canada rather than local walk-in traffic. The Financial District is also home to much of Toronto's accounting and banking industry, work that regularly overlaps with the corporate and cross-border tax planning at the center of the firm's practice. A second office in southeast Calgary extends that same national practice to Alberta.
