David Young Law is a solo counsel and consulting practice in downtown Toronto focused entirely on privacy and regulatory compliance. Principal David Young was called to the Ontario Bar in 1977, after an LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1975 and a BA (Hons.) from McGill University in 1969. David Young has advised clients on marketing and related regulatory matters, and on privacy since the enactment of Canada's private sector privacy laws.
The practice advises both private and public sector clients on privacy compliance, data sharing agreements, employee privacy, personal health information, security, consent documentation, de-identification, and access to information requests. It also covers the marketing side of regulatory law: digital advertising, Canada's anti-spam legislation (CASL), social media compliance, and food and drug law. David Young is a co-author of Canadian Advertising and Marketing Law, published by Thomson Reuters, and of Marketing Communications Services Agreement, Commentary and Model Agreement, published by the Association of Canadian Advertisers. Rather than a conventional law firm structure, the practice runs on a counsel and consulting model, with a non-billable initial consultation and a mix of hourly, project, and hybrid fee arrangements.
Wheelchair accessibleThe firm's office is at Suite 3500 of the Hudson's Bay Centre at 2 Bloor Street East, at the northeast corner of Yonge and Bloor, in what's known locally as Toronto's Mink Mile shopping strip. The tower is connected to Bloor-Yonge station, where the TTC's north-south and east-west subway lines cross. That's a practical fit for a regulatory counsel practice: David Young Law doesn't rely on walk-in local clients but advises private and public sector organizations from across Canada, and a transit-connected downtown address makes it an easy stop for out-of-town meetings.
The building itself dates to 1974 and was known as the Hudson's Bay Centre, home to a Hudson's Bay department store at Yonge and Bloor until that store closed in 2022. The office tower and underground concourse remain in active commercial use, connected by tunnel to the surrounding shopping district, a fitting location for a practice that spends much of its time advising retailers and marketers on advertising, anti-spam, and consumer data rules.
