Axess Law grew out of retail law. Mark Morris and Lena Koke had spent time helping pharmacies and restaurants get into Walmart stores, and as retail lawyers they understood the shoppers there. About a year before April 2014, they took their own firm into Walmart too. Its first office was in downtown Toronto, offering real estate, wills and notary work.
By April 2014 the firm had an office in the Walmart near Warden Avenue and Eglinton Avenue East, plus offices in the Walmarts at Scarborough Town Centre and on Copper Creek Drive in Markham, with fixed fees and most locations open until 8 p.m. daily. With the Walmart storefronts working as intake centres, Axess Law had the ability to grow its back-end real estate operations in downtown Toronto. Later growth took Axess Law to 14 offices across Ontario, began offering consultations by video for both real estate and estate planning, passed the 100,000-client mark, and brought new offices in British Columbia and Alberta.
Real estate is the core of the practice, from purchases, sales and refinances to title transfers and representing lenders, with Shraya Patel serving as head real estate lawyer. Some of its flat-fee packages include a virtual signing appointment and unlimited access to the legal team, and realtors can get their commission payments the same day.
Before drafting, a lawyer walks you through questions about your executor and beneficiaries and notes your wishes; the finished will is witnessed by a lawyer and kept in a safety deposit box. Primary and secondary wills are available, and the first probate consultation costs nothing. For probate, the firm files at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice office for the region where the deceased lived.
Every notary public at Axess Law is a lawyer. In-person notarizations happen at its Greater Toronto Area and Ottawa offices and take about 5 to 10 minutes, and the team also drafts and notarizes travel consent letters for children travelling without a parent.
For start-ups and small businesses, the firm handles business name registration, incorporations and partnerships, and it'll talk you through whether to incorporate provincially or federally. Its business lawyers also put together corporate minute books.

The mall sits next to the Scarborough Centre Bus Terminal, and the Walmart store there opened in July 2001.
