Virani Law helps homeowners and business owners through their insurance claims after a fire, flood or other property loss, working toward a fair settlement with the insurer. It's based in Guelph, it acts for clients from one coast of Canada to the other, and it grew out of its founder's own family's house fire.
That history is the reason the firm exists. In 2014 a fire destroyed a Virani family home, killing Fy Virani's uncle and sending four relatives to hospital. Fy spent the following year looking after the family and dealing with the insurer, and the settlement that came out of it was more than twice what the company first put on the table. Fy opened Virani Law in 2015 to give other homeowners that same kind of help. Before that, Fy had studied criminal justice and public policy at the University of Guelph, earned a Juris Doctor at the University of Victoria, and worked at a large Toronto firm and at a firm in Victoria, BC, gaining experience in personal injury, family and criminal law.
Jess Stewart, a partner since 2022, practised public interest law in Seattle after being admitted to the Washington State Bar in 2014. Jess then returned to Canada, earned a second law degree at Western, and was called to the Ontario Bar in June 2017 after articling at a plaintiff-side firm. Associate counsel Stefan Wittman works from Vancouver, and that presence helped give the firm its national reach. Four members of the paralegal team came through Mohawk College's paralegal program with a placement at Virani Law, and three of them stayed on with the firm afterwards.
Every new matter starts with a free consultation, where the team hears what happened and works out a plan for dealing with the insurer, and a claim review costs nothing. Fees aren't one size fits all: the firm offers several structures and talks them through at that first conversation. Home fire and flood claims
For a damaged house, Virani Law works on each part of the claim: the rebuild of the dwelling, including disagreements over bylaw or upgrade coverage; the value of lost belongings, which insurers often set too low or depreciate too far; and the extra costs of living somewhere else while the home is out of use.
Commercial property losses
After a fire or flood shuts a business down, the firm helps the owner put a business interruption claim to the insurer and makes sure no part of the coverage is missed, doubled up or given away. That includes sorting out whether particular items count as equipment or as contents.
Wildfires and natural disasters
One natural disaster can produce tens or even hundreds of claims and swamp insurers and their adjusters, and the firm works to keep each homeowner's claim from being missed in that crowd. A disaster loss splits into four coverage areas, one of them mass evacuation. This work has included many Fort McMurray families in 2016.

Virani Law's goal is a negotiated settlement, reached as quickly and fairly as possible, and the firm negotiates with the aim of staying out of arbitration. When it's needed, it's ready to represent homeowners at appraisal and dispute resolution, and to bring a civil claim if settling isn't possible. Homeowners with a residential damage claim are taken through a structured Recovery Process: a review of the policy, documentation of the damage, negotiation with the insurer and free counselling. Through a partnership with Alli Therapy, the firm pays for five counselling sessions with a therapist the client picks.
