About Russell Alexander Collaborative Family Lawyers
Russell Alexander Collaborative Family Lawyers practises family law exclusively, and it brings extensive experience to people going through separation or divorce. It supports families across Ontario and Alberta, with offices that include Toronto, Lindsay, Peterborough and Kingston.
Russell Alexander, the founder, still helps clients with separation, divorce, parenting and support issues, while also overseeing every office location and supervising the firm’s clerks. The founder has extensive experience with high net-worth and self-employed clients, is fully trained in Collaborative Practice, and belongs to the Durham and York Region Collaborative Practice Groups.
The lawyers bring a wide range of backgrounds to a file. Margie Primero-Pimentel also serves as a Dispute Resolution Officer at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Newmarket and Toronto. Golan Yaron was first called to the bar in Israel in 1996 and prosecuted many criminal offences there on behalf of the state. Ori Bergman spent many years as a rabbi, an educator and a certified life and relationship coach. Deepti Sharma held HR management roles at Fortune 500 companies for six years before joining the Alberta bar in 2021. Bill Rogers won McConnell v. Huxtable (2014 ONCA 86) at the Ontario Court of Appeal, a family law victory that stopped a proposed two-year deadline from being imposed on unmarried spouses’ property claims.
The firm also shares a good deal of family law information beyond its client work. FamilyLLB, the firm’s Ontario divorce education centre, adds new blog posts at least twice a week on legislative changes, court cases and legal news. Family Law Now LIVE is a monthly virtual series that grew out of the Family Law Now podcast, with Russell Alexander hosting alongside a rotating panel of the firm’s associates and guest speakers. For family lawyers and family and financial professionals, there’s Ontario Divorce Discourse, a monthly newsletter.
History
Russell Alexander started the practice in 1998 as Russell Alexander Family Lawyers; today it’s Russell Alexander Collaborative Family Lawyers. The first office opened in Lindsay, a Brooklin office followed in 2006, and Markham came next in 2010.
The firm’s lawyers are trained in Collaborative Practice, and the goal is always to resolve a client’s matter without litigation. When an agreement can’t be reached outside court, the lawyers are prepared to argue the case before the Family Court.
The firm helps parents protect their parental rights in child protection and CAS proceedings, and it guides families through each step of the adoption process.
How Russell Alexander Collaborative Family Lawyers works
The team works collaboratively, but every client who retains the firm has one lawyer and one law clerk dedicated to the file. Getting started is a conversation with the Intake Team, which learns about your circumstances and then matches you with a lawyer suited to your case.
Email is the preferred way to communicate on a file. Lawyers’ assistants handle as many phone calls as possible, so the lawyers are free for the work only a lawyer can do, and a 24 hour answering service takes calls outside business hours. If a matter stalls, and particularly if the other side hasn’t provided financial disclosure, the firm’s policy is to start a court case.
