Paul Jones is the principal lawyer at Jones & Co., with a practice built around the national and international distribution of goods and services. He advises on franchising, licensing, distribution, intellectual property, competition, e-commerce, and privacy law, and is familiar with both common law and civil law systems. On the intellectual property side, he handles trademark and domain name applications and disputes, including counterfeiting matters, and assisted a client in a landmark Supreme Court of Canada pharmaceutical patent case. He also advises on copyright matters in software, entertainment, and film, and on patent disputes involving alleged abuse of patent rights. In franchising work, Paul develops franchise systems and licensing and distribution programs, drafts disclosure documents and agreements, and has advised foreign franchisors entering Canada as well as Canadian companies expanding abroad. He has been consulted by the governments of Ontario and the People's Republic of China on franchise legislation. His privacy and e-commerce practice includes advising on compliance policies across multiple countries and handling data protection disputes and access to information matters; he obtained the first internet liquor license issued in Canada.
