Portman earned an honours science degree from the University of Toronto before attending both Osgoode Hall Law School and the University of New Brunswick's Ludlow Hall, where he completed his law degree and won the New Brunswick Trial Lawyers' Association Prize in Trial Advocacy. He later completed a Master of Laws at the University of Edinburgh and has argued cases at various court levels, including trials and divisional court appeals. He taught family law, civil litigation and employment law at Seneca College in York Region for almost ten years and previously sat on the boards of the York Region Law Association and the Family Education Centre in Peel. His practice today centers on civil litigation, family, employment and estate law, and he completed Osgoode's Certificate in Estate Law to handle complex wills and estate matters. He was called to the bar in 2017 and sees clients from the firm's Oshawa, Newmarket, Barrie and Mississauga offices.
