He has advised First Nations in Quebec, Ontario and Alberta since 2001 on Aboriginal and treaty rights, environmental law, land matters and governance, and represents clients before Quebec and Ontario courts as well as the Federal Courts. Richards has been a member of the Barreau du Québec since 2001 and the Law Society of Ontario since 2010, and holds a master's degree (2005) and a doctorate in law (2016), both completed at McGill University. He offers a free preliminary phone consultation to members of First Nations on topics such as Indian status, tax exemptions, and on-reserve estates, and is recognized as a certified specialist in Aboriginal law and governance in Ontario.
