About Melissa

Melissa S. Byer is a family law lawyer at Stock Family Law in Calgary. She was born in Toronto, Ontario, and graduated Cum Laude with an Honours Degree in Criminology from the University of Ottawa in 1994 before earning her LL.B. from the University of Alberta in 1998. She was called to the Alberta Bar in 1999 and began her career practising corporate, securities, and mergers and acquisitions law with an international firm in Calgary, later moving in-house as senior legal counsel with a multinational pipeline company. After raising her children, she re-entered the profession in family law, first as a senior paralegal and then as an associate, gaining experience in both family law and Indigenous law, including drafting a proposed child welfare statute and regulations. Her corporate background also helps her navigate business valuation and tax issues that arise in family law files.
