Mathew Farrell grew up in Saskatchewan before moving to Calgary, where he won provincial wrestling titles and a national championship. He graduated from the University of Calgary with distinction, receiving the student-athlete award for the highest GPA among varsity athletes, and completed his law degree at Queen's University. He articled at a small Airdrie firm before working at larger Calgary firms to develop his litigation practice, including experience in real estate and corporate law, and has appeared as lead counsel before the Provincial Court, the Court of King's Bench, the Court of Appeal, the Federal Court, and various arbitral tribunals. His cases have included representing residents of the Midfield Mobile Home Park, a challenge to Alberta Health Services before the Court of Appeal, and COVID-19 class action litigation. He was nominated for Canadian Lawyer Magazine's 25 Most Influential Lawyers in 2019 and was a finalist for a Lexpert Rising Star award.
