About Leonard

Leonard M. Shore, KC, practiced criminal law for almost 60 years before retiring in January 2026; he continues to act as a consultant with the firm. In 1974 he was one of the founding members of the Defence Counsel Association of Ottawa and served as its first president, and he was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1980. He has appeared before all levels of the Ontario and Federal Courts, and before federal judicial inquiries including the Gomery Inquiry and the Arar Inquiry. He served as amicus curiae to the Federal Court on matters involving Canada's anti-terrorism legislation and was among the first lawyers named Special Advocates by the federal Minister of Justice and Attorney General shortly after that legislation passed. He also taught in the Criminal Procedure Program of the Law Society of Upper Canada's Bar Admission Course, serving for several years as its senior instructor.
