Mark McCourt is the founder and principal counsel of McCourt Law Offices, which he established in Edmonton in 1995. He was born and raised in Edmonton and holds degrees in political science and law from the University of Alberta. He has more than 35 years of experience as a lawyer and has appeared at all levels of the Alberta courts, including the Court of Justice, the Court of King's Bench and the Court of Appeal, as well as the Federal Court of Canada. In 2003 he founded the Accident Victims/Insurance Policyholders Advocate (AVIPA), which opposed Alberta's cap on pain and suffering compensation for certain soft-tissue injuries. His academic articles have appeared in the Alberta Law Review, the Saskatchewan Law Review, the Manitoba Law Journal, the Canadian Family Law Quarterly, Legal Medical Quarterly and The Barrister, and he has been interviewed as a commentator on injury law in Alberta media. In 2004 he was named one of Alberta's 50 most influential people by Alberta Venture magazine.
