She studied political science at McGill University before earning her civil law degree from the Faculté de droit at the Université de Montréal in 1980, and later studied comparative law in McGill's graduate faculty in 1982. She articled with Ogilvy Renault beginning in 1981 and has been a member of the Quebec Bar since 1981. After a period at Banque Nationale de Paris, she returned to private practice in 1982 and has represented individuals before the courts since. She has also volunteered for over 15 years running a legal clinic at the West Island community resource centre in Pointe-Claire, after previously doing similar volunteer work at the Montreal YWCA.
