About J. James Renick

Municipal law, planning and development are the heart of Jim Renick's work as a partner at Goad and Goad LLP in Cambridge, and that includes the related tribunal and hearing work. Ever since being called to the bar, Jim has acted as counsel both for municipalities and for clients in the development field. Next to that core, there's a general practice in real estate, wills and estates, and corporate/commercial law.

Jim has practised law since 1992. Along the way Jim founded Jim Renick & Associates, a law office on Talbot Street North in Essex, Ontario, whose work spanned municipal, real estate, wills and estates, and corporate matters. The road to Goad and Goad began with a working friendship: about 15 years ago Jim was doing outside legal work for a large single-tier municipality where Steve Matheson was in-house counsel, and the two had long hoped to practise together.

Law wasn't the first plan. Jim was born in Calgary, left at 15, and took a science degree in toxicology and environmental science at the University of Toronto without giving a legal career a thought. Other people saw it differently and kept pushing until Jim agreed to try. Law degrees from the University of Windsor and the University of Detroit followed, and Jim hasn't looked back.

Outside the office, you're likely to find Jim on a golf course (with a self-confessed shaky swing) or at the movies with family. Three grown children living in Central Canada, Western Canada and the United States give Jim plenty of reasons to travel, the grandkids most of all.
