About Gilliana
Gilliana (Jill) Shiskin earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Calgary and articled under C. John Hooker, a well-known Calgary criminal defence lawyer. She is a member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta and practices primarily in criminal defence and criminal appeals, including Charter of Rights applications. During law school she received the Pro Bono Students Canada Volunteer of the Year award for leading the Human Rights Project and founded the University of Calgary's animal advocacy group, SADCLawS. She spent a semester studying in Lucerne, Switzerland on a Norton Rose International Study Grant, earning a Certificate in Global Legal Studies, and was also awarded a Norton Rose Energy Law Internship to research injection-induced seismicity. She holds a Master's degree in Philosophy (Logic and Language) from the University of Alberta and a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy from the University of British Columbia, where she played varsity volleyball for four years. Before law school, she spent over a decade in business management and human resources, most recently as a Human Resources Business Advisor for a large oil and gas company.
