About George

George Akpan is the Managing Counsel at The Fortress Law. He is a dual-qualified lawyer in Canada and Nigeria with more than two decades of experience in corporate commercial law, oil and gas law, energy law, foreign investment law, regulatory compliance, and dispute resolution. Before founding the firm, Akpan was a Senior Associate at Republic Law, where he led the corporate commercial practice, and spent over thirteen years at Mobil Producing Nigeria, an ExxonMobil affiliate, rising to Senior Legal Counsel. He advised on Nigeria's Petroleum Industry Act and represented the company on the Oil and Gas Industry Group for eight years. Akpan holds a Ph.D. from the National University of Singapore, an LL.M. with distinction from the University of Dundee in petroleum law, a second LL.M. from the University of Lagos in corporate law, and an LL.B. (Hons) from the University of Uyo. He was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 1990 and to the Alberta Bar in 2024, and is a member in good standing of the Law Society of Alberta and the Nigerian Bar Association.
