About Fil Mendes

Fil Mendes is a civil litigator and a founding partner of Amaral Mendes LLP who acts for plaintiffs and defendants alike. Defence work is where Fil has built a particular strength, in claims that grow out of motor vehicle accidents and in claims made against municipalities, professionals, and the owners or occupiers of property. Fil's litigation has gone to every level of Ontario's courts, and before administrative tribunals too.

Fil was born and raised in London, Ontario, earned an undergraduate degree and then a law degree at Western University, and was called to the Ontario bar in 2006.

Fil, whose full first name is Filipe, is fluent in Portuguese and can read, write and speak it, having picked the language up at home and at Portuguese School. That connection carries into the community: Fil is the longtime president of the Waterloo Region Portuguese Business and Professionals Association.

Away from work, Fil golfs, mountain bikes, and both plays and watches soccer. The soccer loyalties begin with Vitória Sport Clube of Guimarães, the hometown of Fil's parents, and stretch to FC Porto and Chelsea FC. Fil's also been an Edmonton Oilers and San Francisco 49ers fan for life, and makes a home in Waterloo.
