Aylward holds a joint honours degree in political science and economics from Memorial University, where he received the gold medal in economics, and a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University. He is a member of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Canadian Bar Association, the American Association of Justice (including its Brain Injury and Medical Malpractice subsections), the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association (including its Medical Malpractice and Disability Insurance subsections), and the Atlantic Provinces Trial Lawyers Association, and he is a former chairperson of the CBA's National Civil Litigation Section. He was chairperson of the Law Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador and has served as a panel chair of the Mental Health Care and Treatment Board and on the discipline panel of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Newfoundland and Labrador. He published the Newfoundland and Labrador Case Digest between 1993 and 2012. His practice focuses on personal injury, medical malpractice, and disability and other insurance disputes; he was lead counsel in a cerebral palsy birth injury claim that produced the second-highest settlement recorded in Atlantic Canada, and he holds the designation of Queen's Counsel.
