Emily grew up in the rural area around Thunder Bay and earned a Specialized Honours BA in Psychology and a Bachelor of Education before studying law. She joined the 2013 charter class of the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law, graduating with first class standing and a course prize in Criminal Law, and worked with Lakehead University Community Legal Services while in school. Since being called to the bar she has appeared before the Superior Court of Justice, the Ontario Court of Justice, Small Claims Court, the Consent and Capacity Board, and the Ontario Review Board, working in civil, family, administrative, mental health, and criminal law. She joined Courtis, Desmoulin Law Office in 2018, focusing on criminal law, Indigenous law, and mental health law, and became the firm's first female co-owner in 2023. She is a member of the Law Society of Ontario, the Canadian Bar Association, the Ontario Bar Association, the Thunder Bay Law Association, and the Law and Mental Disorder Association.
