About Claire
Claire Kanigan is a criminal defence lawyer in Vancouver who was called to the bar in 2021. She focuses on defending people facing criminal charges, with a particular practice in prison law, administrative law, and public interest litigation, including cases involving peace officers and correctional settings. Kanigan began her career at a boutique litigation firm specializing in constitutional law before founding her own practice. She has represented intervenors including the BC Civil Liberties Association, Pivot Legal Society, and the Tenant Resource and Advisory Centre in test cases before the BC Court of Appeal, and has acted as counsel in several 'tent city' cases involving Charter rights. She also founded a free legal clinic for sex workers. Kanigan holds a Juris Doctor from the Peter A. Allard School of Law at the University of British Columbia, a Master of Arts in Indigenous Governance from the University of Victoria, and a Bachelor of Arts from McGill University.
