About Brendan
Brendan van Niejenhuis practices across public law, commercial litigation, class actions, intellectual property enforcement, securities and regulatory matters, and First Nations litigation. He served as senior counsel to the Government of Canada in two major public inquiries: the Public Order Emergency Commission, which examined the 2022 invocation of the Emergencies Act, and the Foreign Interference Commission. He acted for the Privacy Commissioner of Canada in federal enforcement proceedings against Meta over the Cambridge Analytica scandal, and has prosecuted securities fraud cases for the Ontario Securities Commission. His clients have included First Nations communities, financial institutions, municipalities, police services, and professional regulators, and he holds security clearance to act as a Special Advocate in national security matters. He served as a law clerk at the Supreme Court of Canada to the Hon. Frank Iacobucci, taught administrative law for close to twenty years at Queen's University and Osgoode Hall Law School, and now teaches at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law as an Adjunct Professor.
