About Tyr LLP

Tyr LLP is a litigation firm in Toronto, founded in May 2019 by three partners, James Bunting, Sean Campbell and Jim Doris, who left Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg to start their own firm. Rather than naming the practice after its founders, the group named it Tyr, after the Norse god of law and justice, a choice meant to reflect a collaborative, team based approach rather than a hierarchy built around any one name.

The firm's docket spans commercial litigation, arbitration, class action defence, insolvency and creditor disputes, investigations and regulatory defence, and intellectual property litigation covering patents, life sciences, copyright and trademarks. It also acts for both employers and senior executives in executive employment disputes, and for shareholders in securities matters. A dedicated Tyr Sports team represents athletes, coaches, agents and sport governing bodies, including cases before the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland, and can advise clients in English, French, Spanish and Russian.

Tyr grew from three founding partners to roughly twenty lawyers within its first few years, adding lateral hires from other Bay Street practices along the way. It has been based on Wellington Street West, in Toronto's King-Spadina neighbourhood, since relocating there in the early 2020s.

The neighbourhood

Tyr's office is at 488 Wellington Street West, in the part of downtown Toronto known as King-Spadina, an area the firm's own site describes as the entertainment district. The building is designated under the Ontario Heritage Act as part of the King-Spadina Heritage Conservation District, one of two adjoining industrial-era structures on the block that have been preserved and converted to office use.

King-Spadina developed in the early twentieth century as Toronto's main garment and textile manufacturing district, filled with multi storey factories and warehouses built for the trade. As that industry declined, many of those brick and beam buildings, including the one Tyr occupies, were converted to offices, and the surrounding blocks filled in with condos, restaurants and bars, giving the neighbourhood its present mix of heritage architecture and nightlife.
