The Family Law Coach is a Toronto based service that offers pay as you go legal coaching and unbundled family law help for people representing themselves in family court. It isn't a law firm itself. It connects clients with independent family law lawyers, licensed to practice in Ontario, who are affiliated with the service. It was founded by Joel Miller, who has practiced law since 1970 and has focused only on family law for the last 30 years. Before starting The Family Law Coach, Miller was a senior partner at Ricketts, Harris, a downtown Toronto law firm, and chaired the firm's Family Law Group.
Rather than take on a full case, the service breaks family law help into individual pieces such as document review, court preparation, and one on one coaching sessions, so a self represented client pays only for what they actually need. Everything is delivered remotely by phone, email, or video conferencing, and no office visit is required. The service is based out of an office on King Street West in downtown Toronto and reaches clients across the Greater Toronto Area as well as Hamilton, Kingston, London, and Ottawa. It grew out of Miller's own observation, after decades in traditional practice, that most people going through family court can't afford, or don't want, full representation and need a more affordable way to get help.

It's a deliberate departure from the traditional downtown Toronto law office, aimed less at the block outside its door and more at the family courts across Ontario where its clients actually show up.
