About SMK Law

SMK Law is a small Toronto firm that represents investors in disputes with banks, investment firms, and public companies. Founder Soheil Karkhanechi holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School and a B.A. from the University of Toronto, and is licensed to practice in both Ontario and New York. Before founding the firm, Karkhanechi held senior positions at firms in Canada and the United States and built a financial technology company. The firm's office is on Yorkville Avenue in Toronto.

SMK Law says it was founded to address the legal needs of users of financial services, with the goal of evening the playing field between individual investors and the larger institutions they deal with. Its work spans securities class actions, disputes with banks and investment advisors, and conflicts arising from mergers, acquisitions, and contested corporate control. The firm has served as lead counsel in several proposed securities class actions and takes many individual investor matters on a contingency basis, meaning a client does not pay legal fees unless the case succeeds. Karkhanechi also sits on the board of directors of FAIR Canada, a national organization that advocates for individual investors.
