About West Hill Law

West Hill Law is a sole estate planning practice run out of the West Hill area of Scarborough by Samantha Singh, a barrister and solicitor. Singh graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2001, was called to the Ontario Bar in 2002, and started the firm's estate law practice in 2016. The practice concentrates on wills, powers of attorney, and probate guidance, along with notary and commissioner services such as certifying true copies, witnessing signatures, and administering oaths.

On the wills side, the practice draws a line between a basic will and a more complex one, for example for a client with children from an earlier marriage, a trust to set up, or shares in a private corporation, where multiple wills can help reduce estate administration tax. Singh has also taken on community roles in Scarborough, including three years as President of the Board of Directors of the Scarborough Women's Centre, two terms on the board of the Central East Local Health Integration Network (where Singh chaired the Governance committee), and a board seat with the Scarborough Business Association. Singh currently serves as Secretary of the Board for the Scarborough Community Renewal Organization and, in 2021, received the Platinum Level Estate Lawyer designation in the Community Votes survey for the Scarborough area.

The neighbourhood

West Hill Law's office on Janellan Terrace sits in the neighbourhood the practice takes its name from, a stretch of eastern Scarborough that gets its name from its elevated position on the west side of the Highland Creek ravine. The area was part of the larger Highland Creek community through the mid-19th century and was formally named after a post office opened there in 1879, and it stayed largely rural until the housing growth of the 1950s to 1970s filled it in as one of Scarborough's established residential communities. West Hill became part of the City of Toronto in 1998, after decades as part of the former City of Scarborough.

It's a settled, family-oriented pocket of the city rather than a downtown business district, which fits a practice built around helping neighbours plan wills, powers of attorney, and estates for the people close to them.

Frequently asked questions

Can West Hill Law help me prepare a will in Scarborough?
Yes. The practice drafts basic wills for straightforward situations and more complex wills for clients with children from a previous marriage, a trust to set up, or other special circumstances, starting with an initial consultation to work out what's needed.
Does West Hill Law prepare powers of attorney?
Yes. The firm prepares continuing powers of attorney for property, which let your chosen attorney manage your finances if you become mentally incapable, and powers of attorney for personal care, which cover health and medical decisions.
Why would I need more than one will?
If you own a business or hold shares in a private corporation, West Hill Law can prepare a probate will and a non-probate will together, which can help minimize the Estate Administration Tax your estate would otherwise pay.
Can West Hill Law help with probate after someone has died?
Yes. The firm can guide an Executor through applying for a Certificate of Appointment of Estate Trustee, the Ontario court process that confirms a will and certifies who has the authority to act on it, and explains which assets, like jointly held property or accounts with a named beneficiary, don't need to go through probate at all.
Does West Hill Law offer notary or commissioner services?
Yes. West Hill Law provides notarized true copies, witnesses signatures, and offers commissioner services such as administering oaths and verifying declarations, for a fee of $20 per signature. Bring a piece of photo identification, such as a driver's licence, health card, or passport.
How do I book a consultation with West Hill Law?
You can contact the firm directly by phone or email to set up an appointment to discuss your wills, powers of attorney, or estate needs.
