About Reisman Law Offices

Reisman Law Offices is a small, midtown Toronto firm practicing corporate, entertainment, financing, employment and intellectual property law, with a focus on film and television production and financing. Hatty Reisman founded the firm in 2003. The office works with producers, broadcasters and other companies in the cultural industries on development deals, domestic and international co-production, interim financing, rights clearance and talent negotiations, and it also handles corporate transactions, music agreements, employment matters and immigration issues for clients in and around the entertainment industry.

Reisman came to the practice with a long career in entertainment law. Before founding the firm, Reisman was a founding partner of the Toronto office of Heenan Blaikie, then served as General Counsel and Corporate Secretary to two publicly traded entertainment companies, Atlantis Communications and Nelvana Limited. Reisman holds an LLB and JD from Osgoode Hall Law School, was called to the bar in 1984, and later completed the Rotman Directors Education Program in association with the Institute of Corporate Directors, earning an ICD.D designation in 2013. Reisman has also served on the boards of organizations including the National Gallery of Canada Foundation, Kids Help Phone and Factory Theatre.

The neighbourhood

Reisman Law Offices is on Belmont Street, in Toronto's Yorkville neighbourhood. A City of Toronto heritage report on the street notes that the area's built form traces back to the city's nineteenth century brickmaking industry, with rows of Victorian era houses built in the 1880s standing near what is now Ramsden Park, the site of the old brickyards. Yorkville today is known for its galleries, shops and restaurants, a different kind of neighbourhood than when Belmont Street's row houses were first built for the families who worked in that industry.
