About Registrant Law

Registrant Law is a small securities law firm based in Toronto, with its office on University Avenue in the city's Financial Core. Nancy Mehrad, the firm's founder, is CEO and its principal securities lawyer. The firm advises portfolio managers, investment fund managers, exempt market dealers, and CIRO-registered dealers (the firms formerly registered with IIROC and the MFDA) on securities law, regulatory compliance, and registration, and it helps foreign advisers and dealers work out whether they need to register in Canada or can rely on an exemption instead.

Mehrad has over 20 years' experience advising securities registrants. Before starting the firm, Mehrad led the legal department of Bank of Montreal's investment dealer and portfolio investment counsel businesses, and was a securities lawyer at Mackenzie Investments and Empire Life Investments. A 2003 JD from Osgoode Hall Law School led to the Ontario bar in 2004, then to bar admission in New York and Massachusetts in 2009. Rather than a fixed roster of associates, Registrant Law works with a network of lawyers and compliance professionals who bring backgrounds at national law firms, securities regulators, and in-house compliance roles, and it offers clients a choice of hourly billing, fixed fees, on-demand in-house counsel support, or a prepaid Counsel Credits plan.
