Orr Taylor LLP is a business litigation firm in Toronto, founded in 2020 by James Orr and Kyle Taylor. It represents both plaintiffs and defendants in what the firm calls high stakes litigation, including multi-billion-dollar class actions, major business disputes, antitrust and competition matters, and cross-border cases that reach into the United States.
James Orr trained at Stikeman Elliott, in a litigation department once led by John Sopinka before Sopinka's appointment to the Supreme Court of Canada, then moved to Fasken & Calvin. In 1992, Orr and seven other Fasken partners started Kelly Affleck Greene, one of Canada's first commercial litigation firms. Orr later founded Kim Orr, now known as Kim Spencer McPhee, a class action firm acting mainly for plaintiffs, and has since taken on defence work for large corporations in competition and securities class actions.
Kyle Taylor, the firm's managing partner, worked as a lawyer in the New York office of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan and clerked for Judge Joseph L. Tauro before entering private practice. The firm's senior counsel brings more than 30 years in competition law, including a term as senior counsel and Special Legal Adviser to the Canadian Commissioner of Competition from January 2023 to January 2026. Chambers Canada ranks Orr Taylor in class actions and in competition and antitrust litigation, with both founders individually ranked.
Wheelchair accessibleOrr Taylor's office is on Adelaide Street West, inside what's now known as Toronto's entertainment district, the stretch of downtown centred on King Street West between University Avenue and Spadina Avenue. It was a garment and industrial district for much of the twentieth century before it filled in with offices, condos and theatres from the 1990s on, and it now sits next to the financial district's cluster of towers.
It's also in the same downtown core as 330 University Avenue, home to the Superior Court of Justice's civil, commercial and class action scheduling, a fitting location for a firm built around exactly that kind of litigation.
